The Slovenian Democrats (SDS), a
centre-right wing opposition party, proposed holding a
consultative referendum in Slovenia on whether to build a new
reactor at the Krsko Nuclear Power Plant (NEK) and smaller
modular reactors, according to Slovenian news agency STA. The
SDS contends that Slovenia requires a stable, permanent, and
environmentally friendly source of energy, "which nuclear energy
undoubtedly is." The party recalled that the ruling coalition
supports the idea of a referendum on Krsko 2. According to a
recent survey commissioned by the newspaper Dnevnik, 69% of
Slovenians support the Krsko 2 project, with the majority also
agreeing with the use of nuclear energy for electricity
generation.
