The Lithuanian Social Democratic
Party (PSL) won the first round of the general election in
Lithuania yesterday with 19.4% of the vote. In stark contrast to
polls, the Patriotic League (LP), led by outgoing Prime Minister
Ingrida Simonyte, finished second (18%). Remigijus Zemaitaitis'
populist Dawn on the Nemunas (AN) came in third (15%), followed
by the former Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis' In the Name of
Lithuania (IL) (9.2%), the League of Liberals (LL) of the
Speaker of the Parliament, Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen (7.7%), and
the Green and Peasants Party (PVC) (7%). The 70 seats assigned
in the first round using the proportional method are mostly
split between Psl (18), Lp (17), and An (14). Eight seats are
therefore allocated to II, seven to Ll, and six to Pvc. The
electoral round saw a voter turnout of 52.06%, nearly 5% higher
than the 2020 political elections. The second round, in which
the 71 parliamentary seats chosen under the single-member system
are assigned, will take place on October 27.
