The Vatican's annual 'presepe'
Nativity Scene and Christmas Tree were turned on in St Peter's
Square Saturday night.
The presepe, a "living lagoon", is a gift from the town of
Grado in Friuli and the tree, a little begrudgingly, from Ledro
in Trentino.
Villagers in Ledro tried to spare the majestic red spruce from
the axe slamming the tradition of felling a tree for the Vatican
as "anachronistic".
