"The Italian presence in China is a decades-long presence, with a great capacity for system projection. In Suzhou we have the largest Italian industrial district outside Europe, so there are very solid bases, but we must aim to rebalance the interchange, which is an absolute priority in the relaunch of our bilateral relationship'. This was underlined by the Italian Ambassador to Beijing, Massimo Ambrosetti, speaking to ANSA on the sidelines of the Ambassadors' Conference underway at the Farnesina.
The challenge "is not only the growth of interchange but the growth of our competitiveness: China is a global technological power and we want China, as Europe has been doing for decades, to be able to transfer advanced technology to Europe too, to Italy in order to continue to grow together," Ambassador Ambrosetti continued, reiterating the need, on the one hand, to "keep our exports to China high" and, on the other, to "attract qualified Chinese investment".
On the Italy-China relations front, after the overcoming of the Silk Road, 'the choice is now behind us, as President Mattarella's meeting with President Xi Jinping also underlined. We are looking to the future. We, moreover, had our bilateral strategic partnership, which is a container where there are all formats of cooperation, all areas to grow in our relationship with China. This was the government's choice, which was also reinforced by a very favourable context, because last year during these negotiations we also celebrated the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo. An event that underlined the depth of the roots of our bilateral relationship and this is something that the Chinese consider absolutely important'.
'I believe that the international system, although the scenarios are extremely complex and unfortunately not improving, cannot be stabilised without a responsible contribution from China,' he went on to explain, recalling that 'China is a global power, it is too big, both economically, but also strategically, politically, not to contribute to a shared solution to all the crisis scenarios we are facing.
