The ceremony to transfer the chairmanship of the G7 Ambassadors' Support Group from Italy to Canada took place in Kiev.
Passing the baton to Canadian Ambassador Natalka Cmoc, the Italian Ambassador Carlo Formosa celebrated the great authority held by the Group with the Ukrainian authorities and public opinion, according to a note: 'ambassadors from advanced liberal economies, including leading EU and NATO countries, are a solid reference for the Ukrainian government and people on the path of internal reforms, with a particular focus on strengthening the rule of law, combating corruption, judicial reform, decentralisation, the promotion of democracy and the transition to a green economy.
Under the guidance and impulse of the Italian Embassy in Kiev, during 2024 the Group held 30 meetings with the highest representatives of Ukrainian institutions and government, civil society and media, and over 20 coordination meetings, maintaining constant contacts at a technical level. In these 12 months, with the Group's support, Ukraine has implemented reforms of important institutions, such as the Economic Security Bureau, the Customs Service and the Accounting Chamber; the head of the National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption and the supervisory boards of the two agencies responsible for defence procurement have been appointed; the corporate governance of public companies has been strengthened.
Also thanks to these measures, Ukraine was able to secure the opening of EU accession negotiations and successfully achieved the technical agreement for the sixth revision of the International Monetary Fund's Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme.
