On 6 December, at the Sala Nervi of the Italian Embassy in Brasilia, Ambassador Alessandro Cortese organised a special ceremony to confer the honour of Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Stella d'Italia (Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy - OSI) on the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court and President of the Superior Electoral Tribunal, Carmen Lúcia Antunes Rocha, for her special merits in the field of law, legal protection of the most fragile social categories and international judicial cooperation between Brazil and Italy.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Cortese underlined the path of a magistrate whose career has left an indelible mark in the history of Brazilian law: 'I am happy and honoured,' he said, 'to present this important Italian honour to Minister Carmen Lúcia, who during her long and dedicated tenure at the Federal Supreme Court has always favoured an interpretation of the law focused on equity. As the only Minister of the Federal Supreme Court, Carmen Lúcia is an inspiration to many young women and her commitment to gender equality issues is highly meritorious'.
The reasons for the award include the minister's decisive contribution to the resolution of complex issues in the field of international judicial cooperation between Brazil and Italy, with a particular focus on the fight against transnational organised crime. In her career at the Supreme Court, Carmen Lúcia has also always distinguished herself for seeking solutions that respect human rights and the dignity of all, without ever departing from the fundamental principles that govern the Brazilian Constitution.
