Yesterday, the Ambassador of Italy to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, participated in the Columbus Day celebrations that took place in New York, together with the Vice President of the Senate, Senator Licia Ronzulli, and the Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, the Honourable Giorgio Mulè.
"Columbus Day is a special day for Italy in the United States: we celebrate the extraordinary contribution that Italian-Americans have made to the building of this country, to its success and to the realization of the American dream," commented the Ambassador. "The ties between Italy and the United States, which are based on shared principles and values - democracy, freedom, and human rights - are stronger than ever," she added, emphasising that the presence of two important representatives of the Italian Parliament is a testament to that special partnership.
During the parade, which carried the tricolour through the streets of New York, Zappia met the Governor of the State of New York, Kathy Hochul, and the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, at St. Patrick's Cathedral. Significant was also the presence of a large representation of the Italian institutional world in New York and of 9 regional groups of Italea (the programme to promote tourism of the roots launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation within the PNRR project), as well as the COMITES of New York, the Scuola d'Italia in New York and the Sbandieratori dei Borghi e Sestrieri Fiorentini.
