President Sergio Mattarella on
Wednesday called the mother of Cecilia Sala, the Italian
journalist released in Tehran after being arrested December 19,
and also congratulated Premier Giorgia Meloni for the
government's work in securing her release, presidential sources
said.
Mattarella expressed his compliments to Prime Meloni for Sala's
return to Italy, and then called her mother, Elisabetta Vernoni,
whom he had met in the days following her arrest, they said.
Sala, 29, an Il Foglio reporter and Chora News podcaster, was
freed from Tehran's notorious Evin Prison where she was being
held in solitary confinement.
