Full citizenship is needed for all Italian citizens, including those living in remote mountain communities in the underprivileged south of Italy, President Sergio Mattarella said in off the cuff remarks on a visit to a hilltop town, Militello, near Catania Tuesday.
"From Militello comes an exhortation, a sharing of opinions that is not only in the interest of this city, but of all the municipalities of our country, large and small, of the plains, of the mountains, of internal areas that feel how the national bond is essential for each of them, when it is essential, therefore guaranteeing adequate services, adequate connections and conditions of full citizenship for all citizens, for all women and young people of our country, in the entire territory of our country", he said.
Mattarella said he had not been scheduled to address the public in the town in Val di Ctaania but had felt it incumbent upon himself to do so.
