The lifeless body of a newborn baby
was found on Thursday morning in the 'thermal cradle' of the San
Giovanni Battista Church in the Poggiofranco district of Bari,
in Puglia.
The person who abandoned the newborn allegedly failed to close
the door to the room where the cradle is located, which meant
the alarm signalling the presence of a baby did not ring.
The parish priest of the church, Father Antonio Ruccia, told
ANSA that he is in Rome "but my cell phone, which is connected
to the cradle, did not ring".
Police are investigating the baby's death, which could have
occurred before the newborn was taken to the church, according
to investigative sources.
The cradle was installed in the church after a dead baby was
found on a nearby Monopoli beach in 2015.
