The EU's High Representative for
Foreign Affaiirs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on Thursday
called for the immediate release of Cecilia Sala, an Italian
journalist held in Iran as possible pawn for a prisoner exchange
with a Swiss-Iranian businessman arrested in Milan on US charges
of supplying drone parts used to kill three servicemen in Jordan
a year ago.
"I call for the immediate release of the Italian reporter
Cecilia Sala, arrested in Iran," said Kallas, the first female
prime minister of Estonia.
"No one should be detained for doing their job, journalism is
not a crime.
"Every journalist must have the freedom to report without fear
of arrest or persecution.
"As the world faces crisis, the role of journalism is more
essential than ever".
