An 18-year-old boy has died after
being shot in the head early on Saturday in downtown Naples.
Arcangelo Correra had been hospitalized at the Vecchio
Pellegrini Hospital in the southern port city in critical
condition.
Eye witnesses were initially quoted as saying by investigative
sources that they had seen a man shoot the teen in the head at
close range at around 5 in the morning in the central Via dei
Tribunali.
The man had then fled the scene, they said.
However, two witnesses later told the Naples police flying squad
probing the death that the teen was shot accidentally while the
group of friends he was with were "playing with a gun",
investigative sources said.
The pair include a relative of the victim, the younger brother
of his late cousin Luigi Caiafa, the sources explained.
Caiafa, 17, was shot dead by a police officer on October 4, 2020
during an armed robbery in the heart of Naples.
Overall, three teens have been killed in the area of Naples over
the last 17 days.
Before Correra, Emanuele Tufano, 15, was shot dead in downtown
Naples in the night between October 23 and 24.
On November 2, 19-year-old Santo Romano was allegedly shot dead
by a 17-year-old who confessed to investigators that he had
murdered Romano because he had "dirtied" his shoes.
