13 mn euros in Casalesi assets seized
Three companies, three cars, six bank accounts owned by official
07 April, 14:33The assets are formally owned by the former head of the municipal engineering and zoning office in the Casalesis' home town of Casale di Principe, police said.
The assets including three companies, three cars and six bank accounts were under the name of Nicola Di Caterino, one of 57 people arrested on suspicion of mafia conspiracy, tender rigging and other offences linked to the construction of a huge shopping mall outside the town, 25 kilometres northwest of Naples.
The Casalesis' criminal empire was exposed in writer and journalist Roberto Saviano's 2006 book Gomorrah: Italy's Other Mafia, later made into a prizewinning film.
Saviano is under round-the-clock police protection after death threats from jailed Casalesi bosses including Francesco 'Sandokan' Schiavone.
