(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 13 - The decline in Italy's birth rate has
continued this year with the number of newborns set to hit a new
record low, Francesco Chelli, the president of national
statistics agency Istat, said on Friday.
Speaking at the 'Stati Gnerali della Natalità' conference on the
birth rate at Milan's Palazzo Lombardia, Chelli said Italy
registered 4,600 fewer births in the January-July period than in
the first seven months of 2023.
"We will have another negative record this year for the number
of births in Italy," Chelli said.
He said he expects a "new downward overshoot" on the record low
of 379,000 children born here last year.
Annual births fell by almost 200,000, 34%, between 2008 to 2023,
