(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 11 - Syria has produced the largest number
of migrants in Europe, the eighth annul report on asylum rights
by the Catholic Migrantes Foundation said Wednesday.
"Unfortunately, the Syrian situation has recently returned to
the forefront," said the report, presented at the Pontifical
Gregorian University.
"The Report reminds us that for years Syria, in 2023 alone, has
been the main country of origin of people seeking refuge in the
European Union.
"In Italy, they are the second nationality of origin of those
arriving, in particular, from the Mediterranean route".
Syrians accounted for 183 thousand asylum applications last year
alone, the report said. (ANSA).
