(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 10 - The new Syrian government has "held a
meeting with the ambassadors of Iraq, Bahrain, Oman, Egypt, the
United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Italy", the only
Western country, said a statement Tuesday from the Department of
Political Affairs of the Syrian interim government.
"The meeting was positive and the ambassadors promised
high-level coordination with the new government", it said.
Contacted by ANSA, sources from the Farnesina confirmed the
meeting with the chargé d'affaires Stefano Ravagnan.
Ravagnan is the de facto ambassador to Syria but is called
chargé d'affaires because the Italian government had asked him
not to present his diplomatic credentials to Assad upon his
arrival in Damascus.
The statement also reported that "Qatar will open its embassy in
Damascus in a few days. The international airport will also be
reopened in a few days after cleaning and maintenance work began
today."
