(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 8 - Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on
Sunday called a new meeting of the foreign ministry's Crisis
Unit on Syria to frame an immediate reaction to Syrian President
Bashar al-Hassad's overthrow by pro-Turkish Islamist militia so
as to protect the Italians in the country.
"The entry of militiamen into Damascus and the dissolution of
Bashar Al Assad's regime entail the need for an immediate
reaction, first and foremost for the protection of Italians
still in the country", said a note from the Farnesina.
It said Tajani, who is also deputy premier, would have contacts
with political leaders of governments friendly to Italy and
"will verify action plans already programmed with other
administrations of the Italian State".
Tajani said on X: "I am following with concerned attention the
evolution of the situation in Syria, in constant contact with
our embassy in Damascus and with Palazzo Chigi (Premier Giorgia
Meloni's office)". (ANSA).
